According to the National Weather Service (NWS), a cold front will move through the area on Thursday evening creating winter weather conditions. Temperatures are expected to drop very quickly to into the 30’s and 20’s by Thursday night. Wind chill could make temperatures feel like they are in the 10’s or 1’s.

Rain and icy conditions are not expected. However, a Hard Freeze (where temperatures remain below 25 degrees F for several hours) is likely for both Thursday and Friday night.

This is the first freezing weather we have seen this season. Prepare your vehicle and home by midday Thursday, especially if you are traveling for the holidays. Remember to protect the “Four P’s”: People, pets, pipes, and plants.

People:

• Keep warm, stay inside if possible.
• If you need to go out, dress in layers and wear hats, gloves and an appropriate coat.
• Avoid overexertion, as cold weather puts added strain on your body.

Pets:

• Prolonged exposure to the forecasted temperatures and wind may be fatal to unprotected livestock and pets.
• Bring pets inside, and move other animals or livestock to sheltered areas.
• Keep adequate food and water available.

Pipes:

• Proper winterization of any exposed pipes/plumbing will be needed to prevent damage.
• Disconnect outdoor hoses, drain and store in protected area.
• Wrap exposed faucets and pipes – including those outside the house or in unheated crawl spaces, attics, garages and other areas.
• If leaving out of town for the upcoming holidays, shut off the main water supply and drain pipes to prevent damage should they burst.

Plants:

• Bring potted plants inside or store in garage near interior wall to provide extra warmth and protection from wind.
• For cold-sensitive outdoor plants, put down extra mulch and consider covering with a cloth fabric of some kind to shield the plants from wind and frost.
• Tropical plants/vegetation will require maximum freeze protection.

Heater Safety:

Portable space heaters are often used to heat rooms and homes. If not used properly, they can cause fires, severe injuries, and death. If using a portable heater, remember these important safety tips:

• Keep heaters at least 3 feet from anything that can burn, including furniture, carpets, curtains, and people.
• Place heaters on solid, non-flammable surfaces.
• Never block exits with a heater and keep them out of the way of foot traffic.
• Keep children away from heaters.
• Always plug heaters directly into wall outlets – NEVER use an extension cord.
• Turn off and unplug space heaters when leaving a room or going to bed.

Protect yourself from carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning by installing a battery-operated CO detector and never use generators, grills, camp stoves, or similar devices indoors.

Se Esperan Temperaturas Heladas Desde el Jueves por la Noche Hasta este Fin de Semana

Según El Servicio Nacional de Meteorología, un frente frío se moverá a través del área el jueves en la tarde creando condiciones de clima invernal. Se espera que las temperaturas bajen rápidamente a los 30 y 20 para el jueves por la noche. La sensación térmica podría hacer que las temperaturas se sientan como si estuvieran en los 10 o 1.

No se esperan condiciones de lluvia juntas a las condiciones heladas. Una Helada Fuerte (cuando las temperaturas se mantienen bajo de 25 grados (F) por varias horas) será posible el jueves igual al viernes por la noche.

Este será la primera instancia de clima helado que hemos visto este invierno. Tome el tiempo para preparar su vehículo y su hogar, especialmente si está viajando durante estos días festivos. Recuerde de proteger a las personas, mascotas, tuberías y plantas.

Personas:

• Manténgase abrigado y permanezca adentro si es posible.
• Si necesita salir, vístase en capas utilizando gorros, guantes y un abrigo apropiado.
• Evite el esfuerzo excesivo, ya que el clima frío ejerce presión adicional sobre su cuerpo.

Mascotas:

• La exposición prolongada a las temperaturas y vientos pronosticados puede ser fatal para el ganado y las mascotas sin protección.
• Mantenga a las mascotas dentro de su hogar y traslade a otros animales o ganado a áreas protegidas.
• Mantenga disponible suficiente comida y agua.

Tubería:

• Se necesitará una adecuada preparación para el invierno de cualquier tubería/plomería expuesta para evitar daños.
• Desconecte las mangueras exteriores, drénelas y almacénelas en un área protegida.
• Envuelva los grifos y las tuberías expuestas, incluyendo los que se encuentran fuera de la casa o en espacios bajos sin calefacción, áticos, garajes y otras áreas.

Plantas:

• Para las plantas al aire libre sensibles al frío, coloque una manta y considere cubrirlas con una tela de algún tipo para proteger las plantas del viento y las heladas.
• Las plantas/vegetaciones tropicales requerirán la máxima protección contra congelamiento.

Calefacción Segura:

Los calefactores portátiles se utilizan a menudo para calentar habitaciones y hogares. Si no se utilizan correctamente, pueden provocar incendios, lesiones graves e incluso la muerte. Si usa un calentador portátil, recuerde estos importantes consejos de seguridad:

• Mantenga los calentadores por lo menos a 3 pies de cualquier cosa que pueda quemarse, como muebles, alfombras, cortinas y personas.
• Coloque los calentadores sobre superficies sólidas no inflamables.
• Nunca bloquee las salidas con un calentador y manténgalas fuera del camino del tránsito peatonal.
• Mantenga a los niños alejados de los calentadores.
• Conecte los calentadores directamente en las tomas de corriente de la pared; NUNCA use un cable de extensión.
